I. The purpose of the Study Abroad Program Policies is to provide students with a notice of policies and conduct expectations during their participation in theBerkeley Summer Abroad or Berkeley Global Internship Programs.
Students may be subject to discipline for conduct in violation of or attempted violation of the provisions of the Berkeley Summer Abroad Student Agreement, Berkeley Global Internships Student Agreement, UC Berkeley Campus Code of Conduct, or the host programs policies and regulations. Examples of misconduct that violate the Study Abroad and Global Internship Program Policies include, but are not limited to:
- Participating in the purchase, distribution, or use of illegal drugs, or the abuse of alcohol.
- Violation of Federal or International Travel Regulations.
- Engagement in any type of disrespectful, exclusionary, discriminatory, threatening, aggressive, or abusive behavior.
- Lack of attendance or participation
- Failure to Inform the program director(s) and course instructor of your whereabouts if unable to attend a session.
- Causing the inconvenience or the interruption of the group activity
- Deliberately abet, disrupt, threaten, harass, or intimidate others, physically or verbally.
- Deliberately sharing of private images, communications, learning materials or other depictions of other students, staff, internship providers or instructors for the purpose of inviting external commentary, ridicule, or embarrassment.
- To instigate or participate in pranks targeted toward other program participants, UC Berkeley community members, or Internship providers.
- Allowing parents, friends, or family members to participate in online portions of the program.
- Violation of housing rules and regulations.
- Violation of the laws and regulations of the country and host institution.
- To own, rent, lease, or operate motor vehicles while participating in the program.
- Engagement in any form of harassment or bullying. Harassment includes but not limited to, cyber, written, verbal, graphic, physical, and sexual misconduct.
- Participation in online meetings while driving or riding in a car
- Failure to comply with instructions given by a program director(s) or other official(s) acting on behalf of Berkeley Summer Abroad or Berkeley Global Internships.
- The use of recording devices of any kind during in-person or online meetings.
- Failure to maintain up to date contact information at all times
- Failure to be responsive to program officials and its partners from the time of application through the end of the program.
- Failure to respond to inquiries related to an investigation of a misconduct or policy violation
II. A violation of the law or the policies of UC Berkeley, Berkeley Study Abroad, Global Internship or the program partner may lead to a warning, probation, or dismissal from the program.
- Warning: A “warning” is a notice issued to a student when the student does not adhere to a procedure or directive from a Berkeley Study Abroad or Program Partner Representative.
- Probation: Probation includes specific conditions, imposed for a specified time, during which a student must demonstrate adherence to the conditions and/or conduct that conforms to UC Berkeley, Berkeley Study Abroad and Program Partner standards of conduct.
- Dismissal: A “dismissal” is a permanent termination of a student’s participation in their current program, the individual’s loss of status as a Berkeley Study Abroad student, and loss of eligibility to participate on Berkeley Study Abroad in the future.
III. Appeal of Dismissal: If a student decides to exercise their right to appeal a Berkeley Study Abroad dismissal decision, they must do so in writing. The appeal must be initiated within twenty-four (24) hours, in local time, excluding weekends, starting from the time the notification was sent to the student to informed in writing of the action to be taken, or the student’s right to appeal is waived.
